Respecting Embargos vs. Breaking stories

So it seems that The Verge held back on the OS X 10.8 story for a week, respecting Apple's embargo as they busily prepared some great coverage.

Does The Verge have editorial policies regarding which embargos will be respected and which ones aren't? To what extent does the site's coverage of rumours (especially Apple rumours) stand in conflict with their willingness to sit on a story in exchange for early insider access?

It's kind of disappointing that The Verge was more interested in helping Apple make a big PR splash (for free) versus breaking an important piece of tech news.
