New to Xbox 360 = Questions

.

Hello, oh mighty interntz people!

I've become the most recent owner of a Xbox 360 Slim 4Gb after almost 5 years of a Wii dominance in my house. But since the launch of the system a lot of things have come and gone and I'm kinda confused with some stuff. Please, clarify my mind.

1_ MOOOAAAR ROOM!!!1!!11!

(or "Proprietary HDD vs. Custom HDD")

Before I bought my Xbox I thought that I could use any SATA Slim HDD to bump up the internal storage of my system. Now I see that is not "quite" (hold on to that word 'cause I'll get to that later) an option. The Xbox uses a proprietary and overpriced HDD and it might get bricked if you try to use another one. But that's not QUITE the case.

There's a hack called HDDHackr that, after some DOS-Based work on a custom HDD of your choice, anyone should be able to use a much cheaper HDD on their console.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The question: Is it worthy?

Considerations:

  • CON: A hack is a hack and playing with Microsoft in the Xbox field is no kiddie play.
  • CON: While it's no Kevin Mitnick Level kind hack, it does take some time and energy to get done (from my point of view).
  • PRO: Cheaper.
  • PRO: I can choose a HDD up to 1Tb (though i highly doubt I'll use it all).

2_ Mouzez & K.board

(or "The best way to play a FPS")

Not much for me but for my brother. He's a casual gamer and great fan of FPSs. Having a video game for him is a deal since we don't need to spend millions of dollars on a computer to install Crysis 2. Just buy the disc (or online) and kaboom, we're playing. His main concern is about the controller. He can't stand them on a FPS over a Mouse and a Keyboard. Thanks to heavens there are fantastics alternatives, like the XIM 3.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The question: What's the best one?

Considerations:

  • CON: I only know about the XIM 3 on the controllers emulators field. Seems to be the most popular .
  • CON: XIM 3 is the most expensive of the bunch.
  • PRO: XIM 3 is the customizable of the bunch.

3_ Bakwardz compatibililility and ztuf.

(or "Quality or Quantity?")

Some years ago it wouldn't be a concern but I heard that Microsoft really screw that up (on a Nintendo level. No one can screw so low on a Sony PlayStation level). Emulation must be coded game by game and the company stop supporting it by the end of 2007.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The question: Should I care about it?

  • CON: Many users have pointed that a lot of emulations are buggy, glitchy and, sometimes, reaches the unbearable.
  • CON: Just roughly 20% of the games of the original Xbox library are in that "compatibility list".
  • PRO: As bad as those ports are, a great part of Xbox lifecicle key games are there.
  • PRO: SPAAAACE. It DOES save a lot of space in my room heaving just the X360 instead of buying an original Xbox.
