The climactic installment of BioWare's Mass Effect trilogy is nearly upon us, and to support the launch EA is releasing a tie-in game for iPhone and iPad entitled Mass Effect: Infiltrator. It isn't the first time the franchise has appeared on iOS, with the poorly-received shooter / comic hybrid Mass Effect: Galaxy coming between the release of the first two games, but Infiltrator will actually affect your progress in Mass Effect 3. The game is a "fully-featured third-person shooter" where your character is tasked with freeing prisoners from a base. Each rescue counts towards your progress in Mass Effect 3's "Galaxy at War" mode, which eventually informs how your story will pan out.

Infiltrator is being developed by Iron Monkey Studios, the team behind the impressive mobile version of Dead Space, so we'll be keeping our eye on this — the release date is yet to be set, but we'd expect it before Mass Effect 3 launches on March 6th. There's also an iPad app on the way called Mass Effect Datapad, though EA didn't give any more details than that.
