Resolutionary?! Windows 8 tablets to support 2560 x 1440 screen resolutions
Microsoft is providing the following recommendations for developers to target when developing their apps. Windows 8 will support scaling to multiple resolution types based on PPI (pixels per inch). This will help ensure the text and images elegantly scale for high PPI displays.
100% – 1366 × 768
140% – 1920 × 1080
180% – 2560 × 1440
By creating apps that support resolution scaling it will allow for apps to only use the necessary resolution for specific screen type available on each device.
Will we see tablets with screens up to this 2560 × 1440 resolution at launch? Who knows. 1080p is pretty damn good and most OEM’s are boring and cost conscious. MS is taking the necessary steps to prepare app developers for the future. If hardware manufacturers want to compete with the iPad the software has the capability to do so.
