How do I tell what comments are read or unread?

I just noticed this feature and honestly, I can't tell the difference between a read and an unread comment. It definitely help to try and follow conversations. What am I missing here?

Also, can we get flat commenting as an option, with a link to the post being replied to at the top of the comment? Threaded comments make it very hard to keep up with new posts when you go back to them.
