Apple's Nano-SIM proposal and what is behind it.
Why Apple is that committed to have its own SIM standard, this is the question that intrigues me in the last few days. I cannot say for sure why but I have the feeling that by doing so it is a win-win situation for Apple. Because if they win, their Nano-SIM proposal, they will have their own SIM standard and this will be some kind a foothold in this space. If they don't it is a win again by showing two things:
1. First how compromised the system for approving those standards is and by looking at what is going on in the last few days you can say that until now all of other mobile companies have abused it.
2. The second one will be a win for them because they will show how NOKIA and some of the other mobile companies abuse their essential patents which they should use under FRAND licensing terms. An example for this is the announcement made by NOKIA yesterday in which they say that they will not license to Apple any of their patens for the new Nano-SIM if Apple wins.
I cannot say who is right or wrong, but I don’t think that they all have the end users best interest in any case. I don’t even think that Apple wants to win this; they are playing all of them in a game that will expose how the standards are made and how the essential patents are used inappropriately.
