The last we heard from Sony, it was going to be rolling out the Android 4.0 updates to its 2011 Xperia smartphones beginning in late March or early April. Of course, late March has almost passed us by, and the company has now posted a new release schedule for the upgrades. Things are now slated to kick off in mid-April, bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the following phones over a four-to-six week period:

  • Xperia Arc S
  • Xperia Neo V
  • Xperia Ray

At the end of May and in early June a second wave will roll out, targeting eight additional devices:

  • Xperia Arc
  • Xperia Play
  • Xperia Neo
  • Xperia Mini
  • Xperia Mini Pro
  • Xperia Pro
  • Xperia Active
  • Live with Walkman

In a shift from Sony's earlier stance, however, the upgrades will now only be available via a tethered update. The 3G and Wi-Fi options will not be available in order to ensure that customers make a "conscious and informed decision to upgrade." Of course, if you're feeling both conscious and informed already, you may be able to get a sneak peek by installing one of Sony's beta ROMs.
