Reports of Windows Phone's demise...

After lurking for a while, this is my first time posting, since I feel like no one really seems to be making a key point when it comes to Windows Phone...

Details are obviously a bit murky right now, but by the looks of it, Windows Phone 8 is almost certainly going to be running some variation on Windows RT (hence the concern over backwards compatibility). Windows 8 Metro apps are all written in WinRT whether they're for desktops, laptops, tablets, or (presumably) phones.

If Windows 8 debuts in Q3 2012 and PC sales continue as usual (i.e. slowing, but still ubiquitous) with W8 preloaded, then by the end of 2013 Windows 8 is going to have an installed base somewhere in the neighbourhood of 500 Million units. That's twice what iOS currently has across all platforms. And that doesn't include any potential Windows Phone 8 or Windows RT tablets, which you can bet are going to be marketed incredibly aggressively.

With that kind of instantly enormous installed base simply by virtue of PC sales, can you imagine any developer not wanting to develop for WinRT? I think it's pretty easy to predict the current app disparity disappearing quickly at that point. Seems like an incredibly savvy move on Microsoft's part, seeing which way the market is heading.
