Just Returned my Lumia 900 :(
CLARIFICATION: Some of you guys have decided to call me a troll, saying things like my post isn't genuine, that the story is made up, etc. If you question the authenticity of my post, scroll all the way down in the comments to see two pictures I just uploaded showing me with my Lumia 900 and the iPhone 4S I chose to exchange it for. Hope you guys understand.
Hello, guys! First of all, I speak spanish, not english. Sorry if you don't understand anything of what I'm about to write below. Secondly, this is the first time ever I post anything at the Verge forums, so I'm really hoping to feel welcome, especially in the comments. Earlier this afternoon, I went to my local AT&T store to return my cyan Lumia 900 for a 16GB black iPhone 4S. Let me try to explain why I made this decision.
I purchased my Lumia 900 with a two-year contract the day it was released, upgrading from an iPhone 4. I read the Verge on a daily basis, and I really fell in love with Mango and the Lumia hardware, mostly based on Verge articles and numerous hands-on videos of people I'm subscribed to at YouTube. So I decided I would sell my iPhone 4 and embrace the Windows ecosystem along with the new Lumia hardware, even though I've been a lifelong Mac user and have been using iPhones since the iPhone 3GS (actually the first phone I ever owned). I love iOS, but I'm not afraid to experiment with other platforms. Phones I've owned include the Atrix 4G, so I've also had a taste of Android, but that's another story.
Why did I return my Lumia? I hate the browser, I hate the keyboard, I hate the camera, and I hate the uncertainty regarding Apollo. Sure, all of these points are a matter of opinion. Nobody's really sure about Apollo yet, but I only had a month to return my phone, so I couldn't really wait forever to take a decision. Those Carl Zeiss optics... boy, do they suck. I must admit I was kind of biased, coming from an iPhone 4 and used to the quality of its camera system, but I was never happy with the couple shots I ever took with that awful Lumia camera. Regarding the keyboard, I just think my fingers never got used to the keys' elongated form, being taller than wider. I sucked at typing on my Lumia even though the screen was way bigger than my old iPhone 4's. I just couldn't get used to that keyboard. To say something about the browser, it's the worst mobile browser I've ever used to navigate the internet. It's even behind the Gingerbread browser I used with my Atrix 4G in terms of quality of experience, and that Gingerbread browser really wasn't the best browser in the world. IE sucks at rendering pages, it's inconsistent in terms of pinch-to-zoom and double-tap to focus, there's no back button, etc. These are all faults of Mango, not of the Lumia 900, but I really considered both a whole package, one and the same. Last but not least, I hated having to use Parallels to access the Zune software to sync media to my phone. I'm aware there's a Mac app for this, but I used it before I used the Zune software and it was really unreliable, not a piece of software I could rely on or ever felt confident about using. It freezes, it crashes and it sucked for me.
Is the Lumia 900 a great piece of hardware? It's the sexiest, sturdiest phone I've ever held in my hands. I prefer its design to my brand new iPhone 4S. I was always afraid of dropping my iPhone 4, and I am just as afraid of dropping my iPhone 4S. The industrial design of the Lumia 900 makes you feel confident about your phone, it makes you feel like you don't need to put it in a case at all. Definitely not the feeling you get when you hold an iPhone 4S. The Lumia's screen is also a beast of a screen. Beautiful, rich colors and deep blacks; the screen's resolution was never a problem for me, because it is so big and so perfect. Does Mango represent great software? It's absolutely beautiful, and it feels alive. The live tiles are an experience of their own, and no other mobile OS can match it. Facebook and Twitter integration was great, and so was Nokia's free software.
Lumia 900 + Mango = Great combination for a lot of people, and I really wanted to be one of them.
iPhone 4S + iOS = F*cking awesome combination for MY needs.
Are you guys happy with your Lumia 900's? Are you pissed you are not being told the whole story about Apollo? Are you thinking about returning your phones? Thanks for reading :)
