Microsoft has released a new version of its Security Essentials anti-virus software this week, bumping it to version 4.0. The latest update includes some UI enhancements, the usual bug fixes and performance improvements. and some changes to the Automatic Remediation feature — which quarantines viruses and malware without user intervention.

The 4.0 update has been available in beta form since December 2011 and Microsoft has started to write to beta testers to inform them that the testing program will end on April 26th, following the release of a final version. Although it's not appearing on Windows Update for most people just yet, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to ZDNet that the update will be provided automatically to existing users — it's also available on Microsoft's Download Center for manual installation on XP, Vista, and Windows 7 machines.
