Would Nintendo be better as solely a software company?
Honest question: Would Nintendo be better as solely a software company?
Obviously, Nintendo would not go software-only unless they had no other choice, but let's assume they did just for fun. I personally believe that Nintendo could make more money as just a software company than by putting out their own hardware too.
If they went software-only and released games on multiple formats and system, they could sell insane amounts of software. Imagine Mario and Zelda published cross-platform. People would drool at the prospect of playing Zelda on their Xbox in HD while earning those sweet achievements. How many copies of Super Mario Bros do you think Nintendo could sell if they put it in the iOS and Android app stores for $5? Imagine if Super Mario Kart was completely open and playable online with friends on your iPhone.
I can't help but think there is amazing opportunity for Nintendo if they went software-only. Their IP portfolio is second to none.
Again, they are obviously not going to do this, but what if they did?
