Leave the Verge alone haters

Now lets give some context:

HTC One X: 8.4

Galaxy Nexus LTE: 8.7

Lumia 900: 7.0

Lumia 800: 7.8

iPhone 4S: 8.6

Why did the Lumia 800 get a higher score than the 900:

Review date of the 800 3/11/11

Review date of the 900 3/3/12

I believe the 800 got a higher review score for a number of reasons.

  • It was the first mainstream (ish) release of the N9/Lumia hardware design so it had a significant wow factor
  • Windows Phone 7.5 was still a reasonably new release at that point so there was a more positive attitude towards its ability to final start competing with iOS/Android on an App level.
  • The Lumia 800s specs were competitive when it was released. Not an awful lot has changed with the 900 (LTE, updated processor and a bigger same resolution screen) in other words basic stuff that people expect.
The Lumia 900 has not been able to really show that it will target the problems with the WP7.5 ecosystem. There is still a lack of apps. Mainstream iOS and Android Apps are not making their way to the platform (Instagram, Angry Birds Space, Twitter clients)
Regardless of hardware and user experience you buy a smartphone to use APPS and currently Windows phone is in third place.
Josh once spoke about review scores being contextual to the time which they were given (I believe in reference to the G1 and first iPhone). The same applies here, if the Lumia 900 was released 4 months ago it would have got at least a 7.8 but the exceptions of WP7.5 are much higher now.
You can not ignore the market that MS/Nokia is trying to penetrate.
I own a Galaxy Nexus and love it to pieces. Yes it has a penile screen and the camera isn't the best but I love it and it more than copes with all my needs. Be confident in the product you want and buy it and enjoy it.
The Verge have a role to fill and that is in-depth technology reviewing and to scrutinise the industry. We and they are not ordinary consumers by the very fact we are here.
Grow up please.
