Is buying an iPad for college a good idea?

Hello everyone,

so I'll be entering my freshman year of college this fall and was wondering if an iPad would be ideal for taking lecture notes on and perhaps using as an e-reader. I'm definitely getting a laptop so I could do word and other heavy tasks on, but I was thinking an iPad might allow me to lighten my book bag by quite a bit and have an electronic means of storing my notes. One of my teachers (Calculus) uses an iPad extensively for creating solutions with and I've noticed that there are many productivity apps for the iPad that seem to work well with PDF's and creating word documents. Is it worth the $500, or should I just stick to my laptop?

FYI: I've never owned an iPhone or iPad before (usually stick with Android; however, Android tablets are pretty lackluster and the app support is meager at best).
