American Express announced today that it's bringing its local deal partnership with Foursquare to restaurants, bars, and merchants in the UK. Beginning today, when UK Foursquare users with American Express cards check in to participating places like Bella Italia, Cafe Rouge, PizzaExpress, Primark, Tesco, Eat, and Strada, they'll be offered deals like "Spend £10, get £10 back." Users simply tap "Load to Card" inside the Foursquare app during checkout to activate the one-time-only deals, which register refunds within three to five days. This marks the first time Foursquare has taken a deals partnership overseas. "We also just built our first office outside the US in London," Foursquare General Manager Evan Cohen told us.
Since its inception last June in the US, the partnership has earned Foursquare users millions of dollars in discounts. Foursquare saw the UK as one of its fastest growing market segments so it was an easy logical extension for the company's existing partnership. Foursquare, which recently hit 20 million users worldwide, is showing no signs of stopping. In fact, ten of those 20 million users are outside the US, we were told. Backed by big-time companies like American Express that can broaden its scope and visibility, Foursquare is quickly becoming not just a check-in tool but also a money-saving tool that's bigger than a simple location-based social network. "American Express has a very strong traditional household name brand and we love to associate ourselves with them," Cohen said. "We've gotten the muscle of American Express behind Foursquare." Partnerships like these will roll in Europe and Asia are on the roadmap, American Express told us, but there are no set dates for when deals in these countries will kick off.
