Today Vodafone introduced the Booster Brolly, a prototype umbrella that uses integrated solar cells and a micro antenna to charge your smartphone and boost 3G signals. Developed in partnership with University College London, the concept umbrella utilizes 12 silicon solar cells that are stitched into the canopy and provide enough energy to power its built-in signal booster, LED flashlight, and USB phone charger, which Vodafone says can replenish a smartphone battery in less than three hours. While solar cell-enabled umbrellas may not be a novel concept, the Booster Brolly is certainly one of the most advanced. The Booster Brolly will be tested at the Isle of Wight music festival on June 22nd, though its unclear if Vodafone plans to bring it to market as a publicly available product.
