What's in your bag, Laura June?

What's in your bag? is a recurring feature where we ask people to tell us a bit more about their everyday gadgets by opening their bags and hearts to us. Show us your bag in this forum post. This week, we're featuring the esteemed Laura June.

About a year ago, I stopped carrying a purse. I also started having to go to an office a lot more. I’m also quite lazy. This combination of events has led to a pretty severe case of minimalism, but it’s one that I’m really happy with. These are most of the things I carry with me on a day to day basis.

Bag

I don’t buy leather anymore and I hate shopping, so I didn’t search very far and wide for the ultimate bag. I just wanted one that would hold up and wasn’t very bulky, given that I don’t have a lot to carry with me. This is a Matt & Nat bag — they don’t make things out of leather, and the inside, I’ve been told, is made of recycled plastic bottles. Regardless, I’ve had it for almost a year and I’m fairly happy with it. There are only two pockets inside, one padded for the laptop, and one for everything else. No complaints, and I’ll probably buy another one when this one dies.

Basics

Basics

Laptop

Yes, it’s a MacBook Air, and it has changed my life. I use a full-sized laptop at home, now only for gaming. The Air is just so light I couldn’t imagine carrying anything more around. My laptop is invariably filthy, but we washed it off for the photos. I’m not even kidding.

iPhone 4 and bumper

This is my third iPhone 4 — I broke the first two by dropping them on the ground. And yet, I still don’t like using a case. I use the bumper when I’m feeling guilty, but I have to take it off for charging, so the bumper is usually just lonely at the bottom of my bag. Like my decision to not buy any leather, I also told myself that I wouldn’t buy any electronics this year, and have made it so far. That means for me though, this phone, which has a dying home button, needs to take me through December.

Earbuds

I don’t know what kind they are, I bought them in an act of desperation at SFO on my way to a long flight home. They work!

Wallet

This is one of those post-leather purchases. It is oiled canvas, and though it’s kinda large, I carry it in my bag rather than my pocket, so that doesn’t bother me. I like it because it also fits my house key. I don’t know who makes these wallets, but it came from a store near my house called Raised by Wolves.

The Rest

Sunglasses

These are RayBan Wayfarers, my second pair. The first pair, which I had for years, I lost in the airport this year in Las Vegas just as I was getting to CES. Nightmare scenario.

Moleskine Diary

That is a diary. I try to write in it every single day. With my hand, and one of the pens which are also pictured, my favorites of which are Varsity disposable fountain pens. Blue ink, preferably.

Book

The book pictured is Angel by Elizabeth Taylor. It’s excellent. I don’t own an ereader even though generally (though not in this case) they’re thinner and lighter than real physical books. I’m sure I’ll eventually make that leap, but I’m not ready yet.

Lipstick / Lip balm

I’m not a huge fan of makeup but I am kind of obsessed with lip balm. The ones above all serve slightly different purposes (some are flavored, some have color), and represent the range of what I like to have on hand at any given time. These ones are made by Tarte, Benefit, Bite, and Bonne Bell.

Not pictured: I always carry a small bottle of Evian Brumisateur, which is spring water in an aerosol can. I’m sure it’s some kind of scam, but I love spraying it on my face.
