New Start Screen Version 2 (updated)

After watching the live stream of the Windows Phone summit, I am excited about the new features coming to Windows Phone 8. Though Microsoft did not reveal a lot of end-user features, they did show off the new Start screen.

I find this new Start screen to be bittersweet - I love the idea of that I now have the option to make my live tiles whatever size I want. I want to being able to pin smaller apps that I use frequently to the Start screen without taking up valuable space. At the same time, however, I agree with others that it makes the screen look too cluttered, especially since they removed the arrow and blank space. I think the blank space made the Start screen look simplified and pulled both the Start screen and App list together (look carefully when switching between the two: the edges of the apps align perfectly with the edge of the screen). It sort of reminds me of an open book and the blank space acts like the spine. See this link for an article on the design of the Start Screen.

I don't see why we can't have the best of both worlds (or at least the option to have it) and keep the current Start screen with blank space and add the smaller tiles (about a 10 mm x 10 mm tile, a little bigger than the tiles on the app list).
