What if WP 7.8 is only missing some APIs?
If you develop for WP (which uses .NET in the background) you include libraries into your project, which include APIs...maybe MS will let WP apps run on WP 7.8 if they don't use libraries which are only accessible at WP 8...maybe it isn't such a huge deal.
If so, WP 7.8 users will still get new, basic apps...they will only be left out with apps which use NFC, native code or such things....
