The web's first photograph approaches 20 year anniversary
The web's first ever photograph — a grainy GIF of an all-female, physics-themed parody band — is approaching its 20th birthday, according to a report from Motherboard. The image, shown above, depicts "Les Horribles Cernettes," a group which regularly performs at CERN's annual Hadronic Music Festival. It was taken by scientist Silvano de Gennaro on July 18th 1992, edited in the very first version of Photoshop and eventually uploaded to Tim Berners-Lee's fledgling World Wide Web system. After last week's dramatic Higgs boson announcement, it's refreshing to bring CERN back down to earth — head over to Motherboard to read the full story, or check out a video of the Cernettes performing their song "Mr Higgs" at the Large Hadron Collider's inauguration ceremony in 2008.
