Weather Channel buys Weather Underground, will incorporate WunderMap service
The Weather Channel has acquired Weather Underground in an effort to expand its variety of online offerings. Weather Underground, which currently offers its own web site and weather-related services, will be sharing its features with The Weather Channel; its interactive weather map WunderMap as well as its company blog are scheduled to be included at weather.com in the next few months. It won't be a one-way street, either, with Weather Underground's Jeff Masters writing in a recent blog post that his company will also be using The Weather Channel's resources to improve Weather Underground's site as well. The Weather Channel recently launched a revamped iOS app to improve its mobile feature set, and with Weather Underground currently providing weather data for Google, the acquisition will no doubt only strengthen The Weather Channel's position.
