Gunman kicks in back door at Colorado theater showing Batman kills 12, injures 50

Police this morning arrested a 24-year-old gunman accused of kicking in the back door of a Colorado theater early Friday morning and spraying moviegoers with gunfire, killing at least 12 and injuring at least 38 others.

The shooting happened during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at the Century 16 theaters at the Aurora Mall.

The gunman, who ABC News identified as James Holmes, was arrested behind the theater near a car. He is described as a 24-year-old white male.

Police say he was wearing a bullet-proof vest and riot mask as he opened fire in the theater with three weapons.

Having lived in Colorado for ten years, my first thoughts this morning were of the friends I made during my life there and of their safety. But of course, my thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of those injured or killed during the attack.
