Modified electric airplane breaks speed record with 202mph flight
Chip Yates, who previously set the record for fastest electric motorcycle, claims to have broken the record for fastest electric flight — a title that was previously held by the Cri-Cri. At a top speed of 202.6mph, Yates' modified Burt Rutan Long-EZ took off and landed at the Inyokern Airport in California on July 19th with a flight time of 16 minutes. Despite an ominous battery failure near the end of the flight, Yates and his team expect to get even better speeds after tweaking the power setup. Later this week Yates will be presenting at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh "aviation celebration" where he will give the full details of last Thursday's flight.
