Remove 3 Dot On Screen Menu Bar on HTC EVO 4G LTE

I got my HTC EVO 4G LTE (from here on out I'll be calling it the LTEVO) a few days after it came out and it has been almost the perfect device for me. I had the original EVO and through launcher replacements, I was able to get by for two whole years with that lil device without rooting it. I'm a simple man with simple needs and I never really needed to root it. I thought I would be able to get away with not rooting my LTEVO as well until I started installing and using apps.

As many of you in the Android world know, Ice-Cream Sandwich hasn't made a substantial penetration onto Android devices out in the wild and thus, many apps haven't been optimized for Ice-Cream sandwich and still require a dedicated menu button. The LTEVO has 3 capacitive buttons which fall in line with the ICS standard and thus allows the entire screeen to be used for apps and not have to notch out a little section at the bottom of the screen for the soft buttons as is done on phones such as the Galaxy Nexus. While the theory is sound, the execution leaves much to be desired as you end up with apps that carve out a sliver of the screen to create a menu button. This ends up looking horrible in my opinion and just not very well thought out.

Now I know many of you are thinking, why didn't this guy just get a Galaxy Nexus or an S3? I'm a hardware guy and for me, the hardware of the LTEVO looks and feels more durable than the hardware of either of those devices. I don't think they're bad devices, but for me, the hardware of the LTEVO is what won me over. So this lack of a menu button is the one downfall of this device, but it is fixable!

After rooting my device and unlocking the bootloader, and getting S-OFF, I flashed MeanROM which has some very cool tweaks. One of these tweaks is the re-mapping of the home button to add long press functionality to the home button that brings up the recent apps and re-maps the notification button to act as a menu button. The nice side effect of this is that it does get rid of that 3 dot menu bar. Submitted for your approval, here is a video of me flashing the tweak that does this button re-mapping.

Cheers!
