To update hotmail id to outlook or not?

I'm not doing it right now as I don't want to lose all my content on my Windows Phone. However, I will most likely be interested in doing so later on. What I want to know is do I need to create a new outlook account with my username same as my hotmail one or create an alias with the same username so that no one else can use the same username for an outlook id?
