'Fallout 3' photo pilgrimage reveals the digital apocalypse's real-world inspirations
While those of us who grew up in the Washington, D.C. area may have noticed some liberal artistic license in Fallout 3's depiction of the region, certain real-world locations were recreated with a familiar accuracy. Comparisons of those locations with their digital counterparts can now be seen in Flickr user LockeVanish's photostream, which contains an extensive set of photos spanning the D.C. and Nevada wastelands in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The entire set includes 164 photos and their corresponding screenshots, and offers a great look at where the game's designers drew inspiration — LockeVanish says in a comment on Reddit that it took a few days at each location to capture the images.
