Cable providers are trying to eradicate the poor, outdated remote control, and Cablevision has taken the latest shot at the dying device. Today the company updated its Optimum TV streaming app for the iPhone and iPad, significantly redesigning the app's interface and adding several new features. Similar to AT&T's U-verse app that also updated today, Optimum's 3.0 update for both the iPhone and iPad allows you to use either device as a remote control, manage DVR recordings, and browse the channel guide. The app also gives program recommendations based on personal ratings and lets subscribers watch live and On Demand television — but currently not Pay-Per-View, digital music, or interactive channels — from their devices. However, this feature can only be accessed from your local connection, which means no on-the-go viewing just yet. The app is free for both iPhone and iPad, and the update is live on the iTunes app store now.
