Polynauts Central: (1/8 Archived)
Today I'm breaking convention to bring you the first #Polycon2012 livestream from Vox HQ, recorded live on July 30th starring Christopher Grant, Brian Crecente and Chris Plante. (Skip to 08:40 for the beginning)
Welcome to Polynauts Central, here on Wednesday, August 1st, 2012.
So, I'm back again and this time to stay. Last night at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo I caught an Eddie Vedder concert, his first solo in London with my girlfriend. It was fantastic. I highly suggest taking time to listen to some of his work today. Here's a link to a YouTube-ready album.
This week the Polygon crew have assembled in New York City, sharing the studio space of The Verge and are throwing out content like there's no tomorrow. Already we've seen The Besties LIVE (linked below) and up top, well you can't have missed it - Polygon Live at PolyCon 2012. Over the course of an hour you'll be entertained about many a topic, I recommend letting it play whilst you comment/read/eat....or whatever you do in the mornings.
Okay, on with the news.
NEW ARTICLES ON POLYGON:
1: 'Final Fantasy III' coming to Ouya in March 2013 by Emily Gera
"According to the publisher, the classic Final Fantasy title will release simultaneously with the launch of the console, expected March 2013. Square Enix will also provide additional content for the console in the future."
2: 'Deadlight' review: undead flashback by Arthur Gies
"Deadlight sometimes buckles under the weight of its own mechanical stumbles, and it struggles to communicate with the player beyond repeated death and frustration. But Deadlight's ambition and strong direction make for something interesting."
3: The Besties XXII (Live from NYC!) by Russ Frushtick
"The entire Polygon crew is in New York City this week, which means your four favorite best friends are all in the same place to talk about their favorite games of the week. So why not have a live Besties show to celebrate?"
4: 'Max Payne 3' and 'Spec Ops: The Line' sales lowlights of $110 million loss for Take-Two by Michael McWhertor
"The publisher listed Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line among the "strongest contributors" to its net revenue, which also included continuing sales of Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K12 and the Grand Theft Auto series."
5: 'Battlefield 3' premium service sells over 1.3 million subscriptions by Emily Gera
"The Battlefield 3 premium service sold over 1.3 million subscriptions, according to EA's financial results for Q1 of its current fiscal year.
The publisher adds its digital distribution platform Origin currently has over 21 million users, which includes 9 million mobile users. To date, this service signed agreements with 57 independent developers."
FROM THE POLYNAUTS FORUMS:
1: Things go cock-eyed in Take-Two earnings call by Brian Crecente
"While anyone sitting in on any of the many video game publisher earnings calls can ask a question, usually those questions are staid, financially-slanted queries coming from a stable of analysts.
That wasn't the case this afternoon when a caller who said he was with "Smoking Bones" asked Take-Two head Strauss Zelnick a surprisingly risque question:
"What would you say is your best selling game and the most professional game you have out there with a cock," he asked."
2: Favorite Game Story Line? Nostalgia glasses on or off by Cannibaltuna
"What's you guys favorite game story line? Not just the games themselves but the actual story line. Any console generation, doesn't matter. I'm a little bias because I didn't start gaming until around Gamecube/Ps2/Xbox era so I don't know a lot about games before then."
3: Making a mod : what engine to use? by Alastor
"I have an idea for a mod but I dont know what engine should I learn. The Source engine is pretty old but I guess there's lots of tutorial and asset to use. What about the Unity ? Or should I look with the UDK or the Cryengine ? I dont know anything about modding so maybe im gonna use the easier one (if there is one). Thanks a lot!"
4: Pullquotes: "I am not interested in giving them 'fun', I want to give them meaning" by Shaun McIlroy
"The director of Heavy Rain David Cage recently spoke to EDGE magazine about his area of focus for the upcoming PS3 exclusive Beyond: Two Souls. Whilst the full feature isn't yet available (it appears within Issue 244 of EDGE magazine) it does offer some glimpses into the direction which Beyond: Two Souls is headed."
REMINDER: Polygon.com : Community Requests Thread by Shaun McIlroy
"This is our "Official Polynauts" topic for Polygon.com requests, those which we've all made mention of in anticipation of the sites launch in 2012. I thought I'd collate them all here for the Polygon team to check back and see if the stars align with their overall plans, whatever they may be."
