Often times when you look back over concept art and designs for movies, games etc, you realise that the original concepts, before the limitations of actualising the product, often look much nicer than the finished result.

Reading an article from one of the original designers brought in to realise the Metro Modern UI design aesthetic for Windows Phone/Windows 8, we see an early concept for how the Windows Phone style could have been used for the Windows 8 Start Screen.

I think this looks much nicer than the final design used, but can also see how it may appear harsher and less approachable.
