nexus 7 - best movie format

Looking to load a few of my favourite movies on my Nexus 7 in preparation for a short break/flight.

I'm assuming were talking mp4, and h264... but what about bit rate and balancing quality with file size?

These devices are pretty limited on space especially if you have a few apps and a couple of games on.

I've got the 16gb and only have about 6 GB in total.

Recommendations and thoughts welcomed :-)

(Trial and error is OK, but takes a long time to keep doing all these sample conversions ;))
