Toshiba ditches Windows RT plans for the fall, blames delayed components

29

Despite showing off a prototype Windows RT laptop at Computex just a few months ago, Toshiba has announced that it will only produce hardware for the desktop version of Windows 8 when it launches this year. A US representative for the company issued a statement to Bloomberg Businesweek, saying:

"Toshiba has decided not to introduce Windows RT models due to delayed components that would make a timely launch impossible. For the time being, Toshiba will focus on bringing Windows 8 products to market. We will continue to look into the possibility of Windows RT products in the future while monitoring market conditions."

While Toshiba was unclear about what particular components are in shortage, the company's initial RT efforts utilized Texas Instruments chipsets. Despite Toshiba's production woes, Microsoft confirmed earlier this week that Lenovo, Dell, and Samsung plan to make supporting products for Windows RT.
