What do people think of this video ? In a couple of minutes it opens your eyes.

Now lets put all the fanboyism aside, whether you are for Google or Apple and just watch this video from a neutral perspective. I think we can't deny the amount of ruthless, underserved and downright criminal profiteering that some of these patents allow companies to do, thereby stagnating progress and innovation as a whole. How the patents were granted in the first place is astounding, the only reason I can fathom as to why they were granted is that the patent office has technologically inept assessors, who in general are disconnected with the world of UI and software development, not understating the rapid evolution and ease of conceiving different UI/software techniques for which the need often naturally arises as the problem presents itself.

The major advantage the major corps have in getting patents is they get to experiment with a new technology first, be it capacitive touchscreens, latest SOC's, controllers etc. then they just patent a whole array of UI and software concepts. Absolutely criminal and stagnating.

I don't think anyone can argue against what is shown in this video, straight from Job's mouth too in some respects. Jobs himself of course is like most other businessman and was centred first and foremost on growing his companies earnings and supressing competitors irrespective if morals and business ethics are broken a long the way because the competition would do the same if given the chance

But we must as consumers and most importantly as people put a stop to this by somehow speaking out in the millions\billions on the internet and elsewhere. This should help influence and show those connected to both the companies and the legal system that people believe there's something very wrong in the way patents pertaining to technology and especially software are issued. It does not matter if you are an absolute Apple fanatic, Ms Fanboy, iOS/OSX developer etc. Whilst your platform of choice could loose power and in turn this may even effect your work, the cost of human progress cannot have a price put on it.

The nature of some these UI and Design patents granted is at times so primitive that even most people here with some background in software development/UI design would derive fairly quickly given an appropriate test bed.

Seriously just think about it. Xerox could have patented pop-ups, desktop, icons and windows/frame etc. WTF! This is no different.
