Bowser's Inside Story: What makes this game good?

Hey Polynauts, a few months ago I set out to work through my massive game backlog (check out Doc's guide to finishing your backlog here). After beating a few games, I decided that I would play Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. I remembered the Superstar Saga being somewhat enjoyable, if not somewhat repetitive, so I figured I would enjoy BIS as well. However, throughout the entire game, I didn't find myself enjoying the game at all. The game finally became enjoyable in the last few hours, but by that time, the entire experience had been ruined for me.

That's why, when I went on Metacritic, I was surprised. There wasn't a single negative review of the game. In fact, there wasn't even a score under 80. I was originally going to make a lengthy post pointing out the flaws in the game, but I figured that would just cause unnecessary arguments. So, in place of that, can someone please tell me what I'm missing in this game? I honestly have no idea how this game received so much praise.
