The News Mystery of $199 Surface RT
I think by now everyone has calmed down and reached a mental verdict if the Surface will be sold at $199 or whether it is possible at all. But that is not the focus of this post.
The day this news/rumor surfaced, I myself immediately dismissed it as being impossible and did not give it much more thought. That day at night my technologically oblivious father asked me, "So my son, I hear Bill Gates is going to sell a tablet computer for $200?" I immediately understood what he is talking about, and then asked him where he heard the news; he was not sure.
I still cannot figure out how this reached him and so fast at that. Mind you, he is just visiting the US for a few says and has no connection to mainstream media. But this news reaching to him this quickly made me realize one thing, to a lot of people Microsoft still commands far more credibility than any other company. US is not the entire world, and price-usability ratio is important to the majority of it. And if they can properly work that that way, they will be able to gain foothold very quickly in the tablet arena.
