What Samsungs lose means for Android

Many suddenly think that Samsung losing to Apple will hugely affect all Android OEMs.

It won't.

The lawsuits that are affecting most from Apple cover things that have nothing to do with 'bouncy' effects or 'square' icons. In fact, outside of pinch to zoom, nothing else is very strong.

Or, at least, nothing that can't be worked around.

Getting worked up about this is typical over exaggeration. Android as a whole is in fact stronger now that we won't have to see any more iPhone type devices anymore. Hopefully, we'll see MiUi die as well. Straying to far from what Google outlines is bad for everyone.

With this said, I feel quite a few of us could see this outcome coming. Say what you will, but those colored squares were definetly remincient of iOS. Whether things like that should be patented is a whole other discussion.

Also, it's funny that WP users suddenly think we're gonna see a huge abandonment of Android by OEMs. Why would there be? Anyone else getting sued has simply found workarounds and continue selling their devices. WP won't suddenly look better because of the mistakes of one company.

Which leads to my last point: the devices that infringed aren't anything new. I imagine that the newest device on the list was the Droid Charge maybe? Who's buying that? It actually saves Samsung money to stop producing or even shipping such old devices.

If nothing else, this overall case ending is just a signal that another case is coming.

Motorola vs Apple.

Whos ready for more back to back coverage of cases where lawyers are getting paid millions, where our own opinions don't matter and companies abuse the patent system and FRAND?
