Mars Curiosity
Anybody else stay up to watch the Mars Curiosity landing last night? I went to sleep around 9:00 ET last night, but woke up around 1:00 and fired up the live stream over Xbox Live. It was awesome!! It was just a bunch of people sitting in a room, with one guy reading off status updates in a completely non-chalant tone of voice, but it was one of the most exciting things I've ever seen. They were able to line it up with a satellite so that it could start transmitting images almost immediately.
While the rest of the world is going crazy about gymnasts sticking their landing, NASA and JPL were sticking their landing ON F'ING MARS!!! People should be really, really excited about this. Check out the video on XBLA that explains the landing process. It's amazingly complicated, and they pulled it off without a hitch. I have to believe that the capability of putting a human on Mars is incredibly close, if not there already.
To justify putting this in the Gaming forum, the Mass Effect Facebook feed posted this image, Photoshopped from the first image sent:
Here's the video of the control room.
