Samsung promised us back in January that it'd be the first to offer the Verizon FiOS app for smart TVs and Blu-ray players, and it's now made good on that guarantee. The new app lets you stream from a selection of 26 live TV channels, headlined by CNN, MTV, HBO, TBS, TNT, Food Network and HGTV. It also includes on demand access to "over 20,000" movies and TV shows from Verizon's FlexView selection.

Of course, not just anyone can download the app and get free TV access: it's only available to those who subscribe to at least FiOS internet or TV. It's not quite clear from the press release, but it sounds like the live channel selection will be dependent on what stations are included in your package — suggesting that internet-only customers will be limited to FlexView purchases and rentals. Still, the service serves the same purpose as the FiOS TV app for Xbox 360: you can do without a set-top box on your secondary TV and still get some service. The new app is available in the Samsung Smart Hub on compatible TVs and Blu-ray players, and we suspect LG's similar offering will be arriving soon.
