Using a windows keyboard with OS X

I recently got a cheap ass keyboard so I can use my MBA in clamshell mode properly and cant seem to figure out how to make alt keys command keys properly. I got the left side to work using the settings in system preferences but the right side (while it identifies as one) "releases" when another button is pressed. So cmd+q works on the left "command" key but on the right it does the presses separately even if I hold down the key (command, stop, q).
