iPhone 5 Implication: No NFC until 2014
Given that Apple follows the "iPhone X" followed by "iPhone Xs" release schedule, that means that the next iPhone, the iPhone 5S, will have the same body but new internals.
The iPhone 5 body is not NFC-friendly. That means the iPhone 5S will also not be NFC friendly.
The implication: no NFC until 2014, when they will have another ago at a redesign of the body.
Though it is possible that Apple will do away with the "X" then "Xs" release strategy, in which case NFC would be possible in 2013.
