Microsoft is announcing today that the company has optimized its Office for Mac 2011 software for Apple's Retina display. After hinting that a Retina display update wouldn't be coming soon, Microsoft surprised MacBook Pro Retina owners today with version 14.2.4 of Office for Mac 2011.

The update, available through Microsoft's AutoUpdate service, is mainly focused on Retina display support, but there's a bunch of improvements for Outlook for Mac 2011 too — including some bug fixes and feature improvements. This latest update doesn't bring Microsoft's cloud-based SkyDrive storage to Office for Mac 2011, so we'll have to wait on the company to deliver that particular feature enhancement. Microsoft has previously revealed to us that that there is no Office for Mac 2013 release planned just yet, so Office for Mac 2011 will continue to be the Office of choice for Mac for the foreseeable future.
