Picking the right smartphone is often a challenge, but things get even more complicated on days like today. Motorola just unveiled three new Droid RAZR handsets: the Droid RAZR HD, Droid RAZR Maxx HD, and Droid RAZR M. Each device has its strengths, with a 4.7-inch HD display serving as the centerpiece on the RAZR HD. Motorola says the new panel offers improved contrast and resolution over both its previous hardware and competition like the iPhone 4S, though it's hard to know how valid those claims are without comparing the devices directly. Further, Verizon's Galaxy S III and its 4.8-inch 720p display best the new Razr when it comes to pure screen size.

Motorola also touts battery life as a strength for the Droid RAZR HD, but for those who need even more longevity, the company is offering the Droid RAZR Maxx HD. It says the RAZR Maxx HD averages 32 hours of performance, though that number drops depending on usage scenarios: video playback tops out at 13 hours, while you'll get eight hours of continuous web browsing. The original RAZR Maxx easily surpassed Apple's iPhone and other Android devices in the battery life department and it seems the company stands to repeat that feat with its latest models.

When it comes to the Droid RAZR M, an edge-to-edge 4.3-inch display gets top billing, with Motorola claiming users get 40 percent more screen real estate than the leading competitor — which again is Apple's iPhone. It's expected that the upcoming iPhone 5 will carry a 4-inch display, so the RAZR M will maintain the edge there should rumors pan out. Motorola also says users can expect 40 percent more battery life over the 4S, though we presently in the dark as to how Apple's next handset will fare in this department. Sadly we also can't say whether Nokia's brand new Lumia 920 will be competing with the refreshed Droid RAZR line on Verizon, but we've included it here nonetheless.
