Please tell me how The Verge gets these awesome pics in the dark.

The pictures on the Verge are top notch (as are the content and videos). I would love to know how to get get such great pics in the dark, these are the shots with which I have the most trouble.

What camera & lens are they using? No doubt they are probably pricey, any tips on getting good low light results on the cheap? I'd love gear suggestions and technique tips.
