Don't laugh but I love my Kindle Fire HD 8.9
I bought myself one for Christmas to use for video watching. For $300 I got quite a bit. The screen is near Retina quality, the sound is better than any tablet I've ever used. The size is my sweet spot. 8.9 Inches is perfect for my hands and 1080p video looks fantastic.
With root, I have the Google play store. This allowed me to use an alternate launcher and install the apps I've already paid for on my Nexus 7.
With dropbox I can sideload a few of the apps that won't show up in the Play store, from my Nexus 7.
I'm quite happy with my purchase. Lots of bang for the buck with this thing.
