Sling Media is known for its place-shifting Slingboxes, but here at CES it's showing off something a bit different: a free second-screen remote control iPad app for use when sitting in your living room. It's called the Slingbox Companion app, and it offers much of what we've seen before on similar control apps. Using the information already in your Slingbox 500 or 350, the app serves up a virtual guide and it provides some social media-sourced recommendations as well. In addition, you can change the channel and the volume, as well as your TV input from the app with a (thankfully minimalist) virtual remote control that communicates with your AV equipment using your Slingbox's IR blasters. Lastly, the app features a "My Media" tab that allows you to play content on an external hard drive connected to your Slingbox on your TV. The version we saw today wasn't quite ready for primetime — we're told it's coming out by the end of this quarter — but we thought the user interface was a notable improvement over the standard SlingPlayer app.
