The optical drive is now completely dead to Apple.
This has obviously been a long time coming, but I just realized how far Apple has come to completely eschew built-in optical disks on their Mac line.
With today's Retina MacBook Pro updates, they've abandoned DVD drives in all but the base legacy 13" MacBook Pro (non-retina display). Once the updated Mac Pro ships in December, that MacBook will be the only Apple computer with an included optical drive.
I would guess that the optical disk (and larger spinning HD) is the only reason they've left this MacBook Pro in the line-up at all, since it's now a mere $100 difference to get Haswell, Retina, and an SSD. I can't imagine it selling well, or staying in production for very long.
I would say "it's been a good run," but I've honestly hated CD's from the start.
