Are consumers getting dumber? The many flavours of W7 vs W8

Literally last year, MS had 6 flavours of Windows Windows 7.

Lets refresh: Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate, were all options, five of which the average consumer could pick up.

Now they have just three versions Windows 8 RT, Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro.

How is it that very similar products which all looked the same and could be purchased relatively easily in stores by millions of people and now there is the constant litany that Windows 8 is too confusing?

Bias towards iOS/Android aside, is it a case of a Microsoft's inability to define what each flavour does, media echo chamber, lack of consumer research, poor training in retail stores, a combination of factors?

PS

Apple has 450,000 tablet optimised programmes in their app store. Microsoft's "over 100,000" doesn't seem too awful in that respect, even if there is a lot of bloat.
