How can I turn off the "HIDE IMAGE" feature?

Sorry for what is probably a stupid noob question. I did a search of forum posts and did not turn up this question. I use Chrome to browse The Verge, and see that images in comment posts have a "HIDE IMAGE" black block in their upper right corner, presumably so you can avoid being annoyed by giant posted images. Fine, except for when someone posts a little image (like an emoticon). Then "HIDE IMAGE" covers the entire image:

I never use the "HIDE IMAGE" function. Is there a way to turn it off so I can at least see those wonderful emoticons I'm missing?
