Microsoft’s Xbox One console launched in the US and some European markets on Friday, but some owners have been reporting disc drive issues. Most of the failures involve the inability to read discs and a loud knocking sound from the drive. Microsoft is aware of the issue and says it’s "affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers" worldwide. "We're working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program," says a Microsoft spokesperson. "Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers."

Similar to Sony’s PlayStation 4 "blue light of death" issue, the Xbox One problems appear to be limited to a small number of devices, although Microsoft isn’t providing any percentage failure rates yet. Out of a total of 1,185 reviews on Amazon, around 25 percent are rated one star with complaints centered on the disc drive issues. A number of videos have been posted to YouTube and other video sharing sites that demonstrate the issue, with no immediate fix available apart from returning the faulty devices.
