Cyber Monday 2013: the best deals from the top online stores

"Cyber Monday," the term widely used by retailers and the press to describe the shopping spree that occurs the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend in the US, was first invoked in 2005 by Shop.org, a website run by a retail trade group. Its savvy marketing paid off: in the intervening eight years, Cyber Monday has quickly become one of the biggest shopping days of the year for Americans, with steep discounts from both online merchants and their brick and mortar counterparts (although, it's worth noting many of those discounts were built into the original prices of products). This year, Cyber Monday may even surpass Black Friday in terms of total sales. We've gathered the best deals leading up to and on Cyber Monday 2013, December 2nd, to help you plow through your gift checklist that much faster and get you on to those holiday celebrations.

Google's new Nexus 7 is one of our favorite small tablets on the market, and there's a pretty solid Cyber Monday deal for the device going on now through eBay. Adorama, a huge photo- and tech-focused retailer based in New York City, is selling brand-new 2013 Nexus 7 tablets with 32GB of storage for only $229.00 today, $40 less than they retail for on Google Play. Another retailer known as ShopDivvy has the 16GB 2013 model available for $169.99, $59 less than on Google Play — however, these models are factory-refurbished, if that's a concern to you. Both retailers are offering free shipping, as well, making it an all-around solid price for one of the best tablets on the market. But both retailers say stock is limited — don't wait around if you're interested.

    The best of Cyber Monday

    Cyber Monday 2013

It may have been invented as a cynical marketing move to force people to spend more money, but Cyber Monday has the edge on Black Friday by not asking you to actually leave the house. Many retailers this year have decided to roll their Black Friday deals on over the weekend until today; others have introduced some reasonable discounts on electronics and other big-box goods.

Motorola dropping off-contract Moto X to $349 on Cyber Monday

    Moto X hero (1024px)

For one day only, Motorola will be lowering the cost of all off-contract Moto X smartphones by $150. That means the 16GB model will be just $349.99. The Cyber Monday discount is valid for all carriers, both 16GB and 32GB storage capacities, and the special Developer Editions available only via its website. Motorola warns that "supplies will be limited" and the company says it will be providing more details soon. Thankfully since Moto Maker customization is now available for all US carriers, you'll have plenty of color options if you do decide to take advantage of the sale.

The 16GB Moto X is currently priced at $499.99 off contract, so presumably it will be available for $349.99 on Cyber Monday. (The 32GB model should come in at a slightly higher $399.99.) That puts it right on par with Google's Nexus 5, adding the benefits of personalization and Motorola's exclusive software features. If those are what you're after, Monday looks like the day to buy.

GameStop seems like it's ready for the biggest shopping day of the year. After hiring an additional 17,000 people to help staff its stores, the company has today announced its range of Black Friday deals. Its list isn't as expansive as the offerings of Best Buy or Amazon, but there are some good deals here, like Battlefield 4 for $24.99 — less than half its MSRP. Here's the full list, all of which are only available on Friday:

Unlike many of its peers, GameStop has elected not to open on Thanksgiving Day, and instead open at 12:01AM on November 29th — Black Friday itself. Keep your eyes peeled, though. GameStop also plans to offer another set of deals for Cyber Monday, which is the Monday following Black Friday.
