Having won an international design competition, Dutch firm NEXT Architects says that construction will begin next year for its novel take on a pedestrian bridge. The span will cross over a river in Changsha in China's Hunan province, but it won't look anything like your typical bridge: three individual paths interleave, rise, and fall, giving it the appearance of an optical illusion. "The construction with the intersecting connections is based on the principal of the Möbius ring," project architect Michel Schreinemachers says, adding that it also evokes a knot found in ancient Chinese folk art. It'll run 150 meters (492 feet) in length, rising 24 meters (79 feet) high when it's completed.
