Even if it was as middling as it was technically impressive, fans downloaded Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to make it the most pirated movie of 2013. According to TorrentFreak, the film was downloaded an estimated 8.4 million times. That number, however, trails the 8.72 million downloads last year's leader Project X managed to accrue.

Some of the biggest movies of the year come up close behind The Hobbit in the rankings. Django Unchained and Fast & Furious 6 take the second and third spots, pulling in 8.1 million and 7.9 million downloads, respectively. TorrentFreak does note, however, that it doesn't account for online streaming and cyberlocker downloads in its estimates. It's safe to say that each movie was pirated much more than what the numbers reflect.
